Anthropic flips Claude Code auto mode on by default

Anthropic is turning Claude Code's auto mode on by default. TechCrunch reported the change on August 9, 2026. What used to require an explicit choice is now the standard configuration for developers.

Defaults win. Developers rarely change them. They inherit the path chosen for them. Flipping auto mode to default is a statement of intent. Anthropic is betting that developers want an agent that acts first and asks later.

The shift changes the relationship between human and machine. More autonomy for a coding agent means accepting its judgment. That is a serious ask in production codebases.

Anthropic carries the responsibility that comes with the default. If auto mode behaves, nobody notices. If it breaks builds, every developer will. The market will decide quickly.

The real question is not whether Anthropic trusts its own agent. It is whether developers start trusting it too.
