OpenAI Ships Native ChatGPT Desktop App for Linux

OpenAI released a native ChatGPT desktop application for Linux on August 12, 2026. The preliminary build includes access to Codex, the company's coding agent. For Linux users, that replaces the browser tab and the patchwork of unofficial clients.
The timing is not accidental. OpenAI had already shipped desktop apps for Windows and macOS. Linux remained the glaring hole, and open source communities kept asking for it.
What the Linux package includes
The application is a dedicated native client, not a wrapper. It supports ChatGPT features and gives direct entry to Codex. At launch, four distributions are officially covered: Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, Debian 13, Fedora 43 and Fedora 44. OpenAI notes those bases power many derivative Linux variants, so the real compatibility list could be wider.
The rollout is global and labeled preliminary. That phrasing matters. It signals the package is stable enough to ship but still subject to rapid iteration.

Codex keeps expanding beyond the IDE
Codex did not start as a desktop app. It launched in April 2025 as Codex CLI, then reached the ChatGPT web app, Windows and macOS desktops, and several IDE integrations. In March 2026, OpenAI added Codex Security, an application security agent designed to find and fix software vulnerabilities. The same month, a native Windows Codex app introduced agent sandboxing built on OS-level mechanisms.
The Linux build inherits that trajectory. Developers can now manage coding agents from a Linux desktop instead of switching environments. The sandboxing work on Windows suggests OpenAI is treating agent isolation as a core desktop feature, not a side note.
Why this matters
ChatGPT's November 2022 launch is often cited as the catalyst for generative AI interest. A native Linux client closes a distribution gap that competitors have exploited. For developers on Debian and Fedora derivatives, the official app removes a small but persistent friction point.
The open source crowd got what it asked for. The remaining question is whether a preliminary desktop app can hold up against mature third-party clients that already know Linux conventions. OpenAI has the distribution list. Now it needs the polish.
